Charlie wanted nothing more than to visit his mother and see her beautiful bright eyes. He was told that she had grown wings and had been sent to the stars; that she was happy.
But he still missed her dearly.
He was in a library when he read about hot air balloons for the first time, and how the hot air rises above the cold air. He read that the highest balloons could travel miles into the sky, but soon realized that if he were to fly as high as the stars, he would have to make the largest hot-air balloon of all time.
He began building.
He worked on his balloon for years. He worked every day of the week. When the balloon was finally finished, it was several times larger than any other balloon that had ever been made. It was a still night. Charlie looked at the product of his hard work then looked up to the stars, seeing his mother's smile embedded deep within them. He entered the basket and started the engine. The hot air lifted the boy and his balloon into the sky.
He smiled and looked to the stars.
